Accelleran Celebrates Successful Completion of SEASON Project
Antwerp, Belgium – February 2, 2026
Advancing Cross-Layer Intelligence from RAN to Optical Transport for Beyond-5G Networks
Accelleran, a leader in open RAN intelligence, today announces the successful completion of the SElf-managed Sustainable high-capacity Optical Networks (SEASON) project, an EU-funded research and innovation initiative focused on sustainable, high-capacity optical transport infrastructures capable of supporting beyond-5G and emerging services.
Throughout the project, SEASON advanced autonomous optical networking concepts by leveraging streaming telemetry, AI/ML-assisted service management, and data-driven closed control loops, laying the groundwork for next-generation network operations that integrate transport and access layers.
Accelleran’s Contribution: Closing the Loop Between RAN and Optical Transport
Accelleran played a pivotal role in SEASON by integrating its Near-Real-Time RAN Intelligent Controller (Near-RT RIC) with optical transport SDN controllers to enable cross-layer, closed-loop network optimization across radio access and optical transport domains.
Key outcomes of Accelleran’s contribution include:
- Unified Telemetry and Correlation: Telemetry collected via the Near-RT RIC was correlated with optical transport metrics such as latency, congestion and link health, enabling intelligent xApps to detect performance degradations impacting end-user services in real time.
- Automated, Closed-Loop Remediation: When issues such as sub-optimal routing or rising congestion were identified, the Near-RT RIC autonomously triggered corrective actions through the optical SDN controllers, including dynamic optical path rerouting to preserve end-to-end service continuity.
- Service Continuity and Resilience: This cross-layer orchestration significantly reduced fault resolution times and enhanced network resilience, while strengthening SLA assurance for advanced mobile services.
This work has demonstrated for the first time how RAN intelligence can directly influence optical transport behavior, moving beyond traditional segmented control paradigms and accelerating progress towards truly automated, cross-domain network operation.
A Milestone in European Research for Future Networks
“SEASON has been an outstanding collaborative effort to push the boundaries of sustainable, high-capacity transport networks that are tightly integrated with real-time network intelligence,” said Stephen Parker, Accelleran Project Lead. “Our integration of the Near-RT RIC with optical control systems showcases a concrete step towards intelligent, resilient end-to-end networks for 5G-Advanced and beyond.”
As SEASON concludes, the insights and technologies developed across the consortium—including multi-band and space-division multiplexing (MBoSDM) optical solutions, autonomous control architectures, and advanced telemetry frameworks—will inform future research as well as commercial network evolution.
